A newly started business doesn't need an advanced website to make a good first impression — but there are a handful of fundamentals that make the difference between a site that builds trust and one that creates hesitation in a visitor. This checklist walks through what actually matters when you launch your first website.
A dedicated domain
A dedicated domain (e.g. yourbusiness.se) signals seriousness in a way a free subdomain from a website builder doesn't. The domain is also a prerequisite for professional email, and is in practice a one-time investment that pays for itself immediately.
Professional email
An email address on your own domain (name@yourbusiness.se) looks considerably more credible than a generic Gmail or Hotmail address in business communication, and reinforces the brand at every customer touchpoint.
A clear offer
A visitor should be able to answer "what does this business do, and is it relevant to me?" within a few seconds. A vague or overly clever homepage message costs you the visitor before they've even read further.
Trust information
Newly started businesses often have no long track record to lean on — which makes concrete trust information especially important: who you are, where you're based, what you actually deliver, and ideally why you started the business.
Contact details
Phone number, email address, and ideally a physical address should be easy to find, not hidden behind several clicks. A contact form is a good complement, but doesn't replace visible, direct contact details for someone who wants to reach you quickly.
Organisation details
Depending on your business structure, it may be relevant (and in some contexts legally required) to list your organisation number and registered address, especially if you sell goods or services directly to consumers.
Privacy and cookies
If the site collects personal data or uses cookies for analytics/marketing, you need a privacy policy and, where applicable, a cookie consent notice that's understandable and easy to find. This isn't just a legal requirement, it's also a trust signal to the visitor.
Mobile usability
A large share of traffic to a new website comes via mobile. A site that's hard to navigate, slow, or poorly formatted on mobile costs you the visitor directly, regardless of how good the content is on desktop.
Analytics
Basic web analytics (e.g. visit statistics) helps you understand which pages actually work and where visitors lose interest — essential information for prioritizing the right improvements after launch.
Basic SEO
Simple, correct technical SEO (clear page titles, meta descriptions, a sitemap) lets search engines actually find and understand your site from the start. See our technical SEO checklist for a deeper walkthrough once you're ready to go further.
Google Business Profile
For businesses with local relevance (a physical location, a service area), a filled-out Google Business Profile is often at least as important as the website itself for showing up in local search and map results.
Ongoing maintenance
A website isn't "done" at launch — opening hours, contact details, and offers change over time, and a site with outdated information damages trust more than having no site at all.
When do you need e-commerce or booking?
Don't add e-commerce or a booking system just because it feels modern — add it when your actual business model requires it (selling online, scheduling appointments). See our comparison of WooCommerce and Shopify when that becomes relevant.
